DMK urges EC to hold election before June 6

The EC had totally ignored their own notification for biennial election to fill up 6 seats of Rajya Sabha members from TN.

Chennai: The DMK on Tuesday submitted a petition to the Election Commission to hold elections to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur before June 6, when Muslims would start observing the Ramzan fast.

In his petition, DMK organising secretary R.S. Bharathi said the Election Commission had acted and taken different inconsistent decisions in an arbitrary manner without putting the parties on prior-notice and fixed the dates. He said the decision taken by the Election Commission is without any consultation with political parties, which fielded the candidates, including their party and also without considering one of the relevant factor that the month of Ramzan will start on 06.June and continue till July 5.

The EC had totally ignored their own notification for biennial election to fill up 6 seats of Rajya Sabha members from TN, for which election process would commence on 24 May and the last date for filing nomination is May 31.

Unless the election for the above two constituencies are conducted before the said period, they will lose their valuable right to vote to elect their members to Rajya Sabha, the petitioner said.

“Knowing well that our party is in requirement of additional seats to elect the thirdmember to Rajya Sabha, the EC purposely postponed the election to June, which is totally illegal and such a move created a confusion among the voters and the votes of that two MLAs are crucial now”, he said.
