Modi slams political parties of treating poor as vote bank'

BENGALURU: Slamming the opposition parties for their 'selfish' politics over non-initiation of steps to allow youths from villages and backward class areas to access medical colleges in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that his Bharatiya Janata Party government has accorded importance to indigenous languages including Kannada for the students to take up studies in medical, engineering and technology.

Addressing the gathering after the inauguration of Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research in Chikkaballapur near Bengaluru, the Prime Minister stated that political parties treated poor people as ‘vote bank’ and never did substantial for youths hailing from villages, dalits and poor to access medical education in the country.

He alleged political parties of playing ‘language’ politics and claimed that the BJP government, having in mind the service for the poor, accorded importance to indigenous languages.

“Language was a challenge for youths hailing from villages, Dalits and from poor financial background to become doctors,” Modi said.

Divulging details of the medical colleges established in the country nine years back, Modi said there were less than 380 medical colleges but today more than 650 medical colleges have been established across the country and 40 medical colleges have been constructed in backward areas where development was a distant dream.

Modi exuded confidence that in the next 10 years the country would produce the same amount of doctors as the country produced in the last 75 years.

On the Janoushadi Kendras in the country, Modi said about 10,000 Janoushadi Kendras were there in the country and 1,000 of them in Karnataka serving the poor by giving medicines at affordable prices and with this, the poor have been able to save money.

Modi said that apart from the medical colleges, about 150 nursing colleges would also be constructed in the country to help youth find opportunities.
