DMK functionary against his arrest.

Chennai: Chairman of a students’ union of a government arts college and a former student were arrested by the city police for allegedly indulging in eve teasing on campus.

The college was indefinitely closed until further orders following the incident on Wednesday, and an announcement was put up in the notice board on the main gate.

A local DMK functionary who supported the suspects in the incident was discouraged by the cops and was also chased away from his attempt to stage a stir against the college campus.

Cops booked Lenin, chairman of Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College students union, Hariharan, a former student, and a few others on charges of causing hurt, using obscene words, and harassing girl students on campus.

Lenin, staying in the college hostel, in an inebriated condition went into the classroom with his accomplices.

The gang allegedly misbehaved with the girl students who were in their classrooms, and the girls raked up this issue with the college administration.
The administration, which had already in receipt lined up against the students chairman sat on this complaint too.

Mother of the victims who was also part of a prominent women’s welfare association threw her weight against the gang, and impressed upon the college principal to lodge a complaint since the incident took place on campus.
Complaint was lodged with MKB Nagar police who initiated the arrest proceedings.

As the news spread, DMK local branch functionary Malaichamy came with his supporters to prevent the arrest, and demanded that action be dropped against students. However, the cops went ahead and arrested the duo, Lenin and Hariharan, and a court remanded them to judicial custody.

Police sources said there are a few more persons including students and outsiders indulged in eve teasing in the campus, and their roles were under scrutiny.
