TN CM Edappadi kicks off planting of 71 lakh saplings

As a part of the programme 71 lakh tree saplings will be planted in the State.

Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami launched a mega tree plantation project at a cost of Rs 191.85 crore as part of 71st birthday celebration of former Chief Minister and AIADMK supreme late J Jayalalithaa.

As a part of the programme 71 lakh tree saplings will be planted in the State.

A release stated that the CM has planted a tree sapling near Bharathidasan statue on Kamaraj Salai at Marina beach on Sunday.

The Government has been taking steps to increase the green cover in the State and as a part of the ambitious programme, the State Government had planted 64 lakh tree saplings in 2012,

65 lakh tree saplings in 2013, 66 lakh in 2014, 67 lakh in 2015, 68 lakh in 2016, 69 lakh in 2017 and 70 lakh tree saplings in 2018.

As the government received good response from the people it has proposed to plant 71 lakh tree saplings this year to mark 71st birthday celebration of Jaya.

The saplings will be planted in forest areas, school and college campuses, government campuses, parks, big housing colonies and by the roadside across the State.

Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, Minister for Forests Dindigul C. Sreenivasan, Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme, S.P. Velumani, MPs and MLAs, Chief Secretary Grija Vaidyanathan participated in the programme.
