Chennai: A ‘vocational excellence centre’ being set up at a total cost of Rs.1 crore by the Rotary Club of Madras East for helping the underprivileged youth was inaugurated on Saturday by State minister for Tamil official language, Tamil culture & archaeology, Mafoi K. Pandiarajan.
Explaining the project, Rtn B.S.Purshotham, president, RCME, said the centre was founded “on the principles of placing scarce resources within reach of the needy”. It was found after analysing the demand data that there was a great need for trained persons in plumbing, tailoring, and software development. The club, he said, had already set up a vocational centre at the Bhemmannapet Community College for the past 19 years, where training in baking and confectionery, para-medical courses and English, besides other employment-oriented courses were given.
“So far, 1100 children have passed out of the College and we have a success rate of 88 % in job placements”, he said, adding that top industries had partnered with the project in this.
Complimenting the Rotarians, Minister Pandiarajan pointed out that education and training are the two corner stones to make a successful career. The government would support the Club in any activity aimed at helping the poorer sections of the society, he said.
