Kozhikode: The Calicut University may take a decision on the peon /watchman appointments by Thursday. It is learnt that the chief minister asked the Advocate-General on Wednesday to give his legal opinion early. The row over the appointments has deepened the rift between the Muslim League and the Congress members in the syndicate with the Congress openly accusing the League members of misappropriation and nepotism with the help of the Registrar’s office.
Meanwhile, the indefinite fast by the Youth Congress in front of the university administrative block entered the 10th day on Wednesday. Youth Congress leader P. Nidheesh told DC that the protest will intensify if no favourable decision was taken by the university.
Calicut University Vice-Chancellor K. Mohammed Basheer, PVC P. Mohan and other syndicate members were locked up inside the senate hall for hours by the Youth Congress activists on Saturday demanding to discuss and implement the last grade and watchman appointments. The syndicate decided to leave the matter to the Advocate-General for legal advice. The Congress was unhappy after the VC approved the assistant appointments but decided to hold back the peon appointments.
