CPM cannot wish it away
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Notwithstanding the attempts being made by CPM central leadership to distance itself from the allegations against Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s son, the state leadership of the party will surely come under pressure to clarify its stand.
Coming as it is ahead of crucial district conferences in Kannur and Thiruvananthpuram and the state conference, the allegations levelled by the Dubai based company against Kodiyeri’s son is likely to figure during the discussions.
Since the allegations are serious in nature and involving a fraud of Rs 13 crore as accused by the Dubai company, it will be difficult for the leadership to cite technical reasons and brush it under the carpet.
There are reports that the allegations against Kodiyeri’s son have come out in public domain following the serious differences in the party at the national level.
Many are even trying to link it to the sharp differences witnessed during the discussions on the draft political resolution at the central committee meeting held in Kolkata.
While the central leadership is likely to probe as to how the complaint given by the private company owner got leaked, the bigger task before the leaders would be to deal with serious allegations levelled against a politburo member’s son.
The allegations have put the CPM leadership in the dock. It is likely to face tough questions from the cadre who receive regular sermons from the leaders on eschewing un-communist way of life and shady financial dealings.
The Kolkata party plenum had discussed these issues in detail. It was felt then that since many do not dare to complain against illicit links of party leaders and their family members, such cases never come in the public domain.
Clearly it is the responsibility of top party leaders who have also held high positions in government, to not only keep themselves away from shady deals but also ensure that their family members do not indulge in fraudulent activities.
