Uttarakhand Congress: Rift over ticket to state chief
New Delhi: Barely days after the Congress releasing its list of 63 candidates for the Uttarakhand Assembly elections, trouble has started brewing for state chief Kishor Upadhyay. The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress had asked Mr Upadhyay to contest from the Sahaspur Assembly constituency. Though Mr Upadhyay had publicly stated that he was not keen to contest elections as chief minister Harish Rawat was also contesting elections and according to him a senior functionary was required to oversee the election management in the state. However, the wish of the CEC prevailed and he was given a ticket.
The problem for the Congress was aggravated when supporters of its state general secretary Aryendra Sharma staged a huge protest at the party headquarters in Dehradun. Mr Sharma was the Congress candidate from Sahaspur in the 2012 Assembly election in the state. He lost to a BJP candidate by a small margin. In the last five years, he had been working hard in the constituency.
