Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader A.K. Antony on Friday pulled up the party leaders in the state for their disunity and lamented that it had generals and officers, but no artillery with firepower. “The leaders should lead the party together as it was passing through a difficult phase. The situation was similar to that in 1967 when there was a generational shift in the leadership,” he said referring to the rift in the party leadership over the appointments of the DCC presidents.
He was addressing a function organised to commemorate the sixth death anniversary of former chief minister K. Karunakaran at the KPCC office here. He said that former chief minister Oommen Chandy, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala and KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran should together strengthen the grassroots base. The leaders should compromise for the growth of the party, he said expressing concern over the discontent in the Chandy faction over the DCC revamp.
The party offices should work as jana sevana kendras and the workers should involve in the people’s problems, he said. Mr Antony, who was a former chief minister, narrated how he and Karunakaran had reached agreements on several issues though they had differences of opinion. The LDF government led by Mr Pinarayi Vijayan had proved to be a failure like the Modi government at the centre, he said and pointed out that the Congress in Kerala had the best leaders in the country. Mr Sudheeran was among those present at the function.
