Sellur K Raju asks co-operative officials to give crop loans

The minister said the officials should implement the model scheme and solve the problems of farmers, he requested.

Chennai: Co-operative minister Sellur K. Raju on Wednesday asked officials to provide crop loans to farmers and alleviate their sufferings. He made this appeal at a review meeting of his department officials and recalled that crop loans worth Rs 5,780 crore.

The government has set a target to distribute crop loans worth Rs 6,000 crores this year, he said and added that crop loans worth 2,161 crores had already been disbursed to the farmers.

After demonetisation of higher value currencies by the centre, cooperative banks were barred by the RBI from receiving or exchanging the scrapped notes, affecting the disbursal of loans to farmers. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had announced a model scheme to make available loans for farmers to carry out their cultivation works. The minister said the officials should implement the model scheme and solve the problems of farmers, he requested.
