Ensure bogus voters are removed, DMK tells CEO
Chennai: DMK on Monday demanded that byelections to R K Nagar assembly constituency be held only after removal of 45,000 “bogus voters” from the electoral rolls.
Party's Rajya Sabha MP R. S. Bharathi met Lakhoni here and requested that 45,000 names entered in the voters' list twice be removed after due checks. He also requested that the CEO take immediate steps to ensure that bogus voters are removed and fresh electoral rolls are published before the bypolls.
“There are around 45,000 voters whose names are either double entry or who have shifted from their residences or died. These persons are presented in several wards in the constituency. In fact, even in the CD given by the authorities, it is admitted that around 17,000 voters are to be deleted but their names are still there on the electoral roll. Hence, it is clear that admittedly there are errors on the voters list and the same shall be rectified,” he said in his memorandum.
Speaking to reporters at Anna Arivalayam, DMK working president M. K. Stalin also reiterated the party's demands for removal of bogus voters. “If the Election Commission does not act, we will certainly move the courts on this issue as well,” he said.
