Congress leadership's search on for new Kochi Corporation Deputy Mayor

Though there are many contenders for the post, it will not be an easy task for the Congress leadership to identify a successor.

Kochi: With T.J Vinod, Kochi Corporation deputy Mayor, all set to quit the post because he is busy with the DCC chief’s post, a high voltage political debate is rife over the possible changes in the top leadership in the civic administration.

Though there are many contenders for the post, it will not be an easy task for the Congress leadership to identify a successor.

Maintaining the group and caste equations will be a challenging task for the party leadership. And if group loyalty is taken into account, it will worsen the internal feud. There are many councillors within the ruling bench who strongly object to the style of functioning of Mayor Soumini Jain.

Some of the prominent ‘I’ group members in the council like KVP Krishna Kumar and K.R Prem Kumar are likely to replace Vinod. Though the senior leader of the ‘A’ faction, A.B. Sabu can be a good choice, he might not be selected as it will change the group equation.

According to the grapevine, the Kerala Congress (M) councillor may raise a claim for the post with the support of LDF members. Sources in the Corporation council told DC that though no formal discussions were held, chances of a CPM – KC (M) alliance could not be ruled out.

Meanwhile, the Muslim League which has two members in the council might not take a stand against the interests of the ruling Bench, though the party councillors had openly raised serious allegations against the Mayor in UDF meetings.
