TD leaders desert Chandrababu Naidu as results pour in

Senior leader Ummareddy Venkateswarlu said the people were against Mr Naidu for the increased corruption and absence of development.

Vijayawada: Telugu Desam leaders started leaving the house of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, located on the banks of Krishna at Undavalli of Amaravati, as the counting progressed during the day. What is worse, the sounds of celebration from the YSRC party office at Tadepalli carried over to Mr Naidu’s house.

Mr Naidu had invited leaders to his house at 4.30 am to discuss plans for the counting, the precautions to be taken by TD agents and action to be taken if there was any anomaly. Much of that did not come to pass.

Once it became clear that the TD was not doing well, party leaders started leaving Mr Naidu’s house. At about this time, YSRC leaders and cadres began celebrating the victory by lighting high-decibel crackers at the YSRC office at Tadepalli. The sounds of firecrackers were audible at Mr Naidu’s house, which irked a few TD leaders. At the YSRC office, party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy with YSRC MP V. Vijaya Sai Reddy and others viewed the poll results on TV. Mr Vijaya Sai Reddy hugged the party president and congratulated him for the landslide victory.

Senior leader Ummareddy Venkateswarlu said the people were against Mr Naidu for the increased corruption and absence of development.

Big screens were arranged at Mr Naidu’s house but most leaders had left the place by 9 am. The police installed barricades to control the crowds that the TD expected to gather there. The crowds, instead, went over to the YSRC office.
