Telangana: Centre funds water grid link to 10 towns

Centre has granted Rs 380 crore Amrut funds to link drinking water supply networks in 10 municipal corporations with the water grid.

Hyderabad: Drinking water woes in major municipal corporations might end soon with the Centre linking its Amrut scheme with the state government’s water grid, Mission Bhagiratha.

The Centre has granted Rs 380 crore Amrut funds to link drinking water supply networks in 10 municipal corporations with the water grid. The work will be completed within six months.

Addressing drinking water problems in urban areas is a major focus of Amrut. The municipal administration and urban development department has received a communication to this effect from the Centre.

MAUD minister K.T. Rama Rao directed officials to coordinate with the panchayat raj and rural development department, which is the implementing agency for Mission Bhagiratha, to utilise Amrut funds.

“The Centre has shortlisted 12 cities in the state for Amrut. The state had submitted detailed project reports for supplying water in 10 cities at Rs 380 crore to the Centre. The Union urban development ministry recently granted approval and sanctioned its share of '200 crore. The state government has to contribute the remaining 20 per cent funds and urban local bodies 30 per cent,” Mr Rao said.
