Tamil Nadu: 127 aspirants in fray for bypolls

More than 50 independent candidates and those from smaller parties also submitted their papers making the total number of aspirants to 127.

Chennai: On the last day of filing of nominations as many as 72 candidates submitted their applications at the Tondiarpet corporation zonal office on Thursday.

AIADMK rebel candidate Madhusudhanan, AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran and Jaya’s niece Deepa also submitted nominations on the last day.

With candidates and party workers thronging R K Nagar the constituency on Thursday wore a festive look and witnessed traffic congestion till late evening. The applications will be scrutinized on Friday.

Meanwhile district election officer D Karthikeyan on Thursday announced that the EC has deployed 3 poll observers to ebnsure and a free and fair by polls.

A press release from Ripon Buildings said ECI has appointed IAS officer Praveen Prakash, as general observer and IPS officer Shive Kumar Verma as police observer.

Both of them assumed office on Thursday. ECI had also appointed Indian revenue officer Aparna Villuri as expenditure observer and will assume office on March 27, the release said.

The DEO also urged the members of public and the voters to register their poll related complaints at cell phone numbers 94450 36578, 94450 36584 and 94450 36579.

The DEO decalred local holiday on April 12 for the residents of R K Nagar in view of by polls. The corporation also announced that all companies and business establishments in R K Nagar will remain closed during the poll day.
