Senior IPS officer Jacob Thomas to pick political card?
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While senior IPS officer Jacob Thomas has preferred to maintain silence on his future plans, speculations are rife that he may even enter politics. According to sources, Mr. Jacob Thomas was in touch with top leaders of Aam Admi Party (AAP) earlier. Moreover, AAP-Kerala also passed a resolution the other day supporting Jacob Thomas and condemning the government decision to suspend him. While AAP-Kerala convenor C. R. Neelakantan maintained that at present there were no discussions on Jacob Thomas joining AAP, another AAP leader in Kerala said that earlier there were some discussions on those lines. There were also unconfirmed reports that Jacob Thomas had earlier called on AAP founder leader Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi.
Jacob Thomas was not available for his comments on the matter. Indicating that Jacob Thomas was welcome to join AAP-Kerala, Mr. Neelakantan said that the ongoing allegations against Jacob Thomas was nothing new as every upright officer faced such allegations. It may be recalled that former State Police Chief T P Senkumar had earlier said in a Facebook post that Jacob Thomas may join AAP. It was following Jacob Thomas's comments against the government in connection with the bar bribery case in 2015 that Senkumar advised: “There are many officers who reacted and acted against unlawful activities boldly by being within the allowed limits. If the moral indignation goes beyond that limit, one should come out of service like Kejriwal or Y P Singh or Ajit Joy.”
Sources said that though Jacob Thomas had more than two years of service left, the chances of him making a comeback to service would not be a cakewalk as an array of charges were pending against him, apart from the disciplinary actions related to criticism against the government in connection with the Ockhi calamity. Actions are pending against him in connection with his controversial service story ‘Sravukalkoppam Neenthumpol’ (swimming along with sharks) and the finance inspection report on irregularities while he was Ports Director. He also faced allegations of purchasing land at Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu and forest land encroachment in Karnataka.
