Don’t close DGFT Madurai office, Kanimozhi urges Piyush Goyal

Pointing out that the DGFT office at Madurai was to precisely cater to the needs of entrepreneurs from the Southern part of Tamil Nadu.

CHENNAI: The DMK member of Lok Sabha from Thoothukudi constituency in south Tamil Nadu, Ms K Kanimozhi, has urged the Union Commerce minister not to close down the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) office in Madurai as it would adversely affect the exporting community in the southern part of the state.

In a representation to Mr. Piyush Goyal, Minister for Commerce and Industry, Government of India, Ms. Kanimozhi expressed concern at a recent communication that the DGFT office in Madurai would be merged with the DGFT regional office in Chennai.

Pointing out that the DGFT office at Madurai was to precisely cater to the needs of entrepreneurs from the Southern part of Tamil Nadu, “so that they need not travel up to Chennai to get the required clearances for commencement of business,” she said the move to shut down the Madurai office will add to the difficulty of entrepreneurs, particularly the exporting community in the southern port-town of Thoothukudi “who are already facing many hurdles to commence their business ventures.”

“I request the Ministry of Commerce and Industry may kindly reconsider the decision to close the Regional Authority of DGFT at Madurai and continue the status quo in this regard in the interests of entrepreneurs of southern districts of Tamil Nadu,” Ms. Kanimozhi said in her letter to Shri Piyush Goyal.
