Jayalalithaa fires fresh salvo at DMK

Oppn lacks understanding on law and order situation, says CM.

Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa tore into the Opposition DMK saying it lacked understanding on law and order situation and that it failed to rein in lawlessness during its reign. The DMK merely made hullabaloo both inside and outside the Assembly.

The DMK, which boasts of constituting commission thrice to usher in reforms in police department had not understood the recommendations of the commission in total.

“There was an attack on M. K. Stalin when, as local administration minister, he visited Madurai... there was no protection to the people from land grabbing from the DMK members who faked documents,” she said and emphasised that maintaining public peace and tranquility is vital for development.

Winding up the debate on the demands for grants for Police and Fire and Rescue Services departments, in the Assembly on Monday she said people have come to know the truth about how the DMK members conducted themselves in the Assembly through newspapers and television channels.

“On August 16, M.K. Stalin (Leader of the Opposition DMK) himself has said that he was ashamed and hurt due to the acts of his party MLAs and was even ready to tender apology to the Speaker,” she reminded and said the 79 DMK legislators were suspended for a week by Speaker P. Dhanapal on Wednesday last, after they disrupted the proceedings of the House and created ruckus.

However, they have been claiming that the action was initiated to prevent them from participating the debate on demands for grants for the police department, she said.

The CM said she came well-prepared to the House on Monday, as she was under the impression that the DMK members would take part in the debate.
“I came here with a photo album and other proofs to explain the law and order of TN between 2006-2011,” she said and regretted that her hard work had gone waste as the DMK members staged a walkout.

Later, Mr Dhanapal while thanking Jayalalithaa for being a role model for all members, said he had been repeatedly urging the opposition members to submit proof before commencing their arguments. But they seldom complied, he added.
