CHENNAI: DMK president M. K. Stalin on Monday said the ruling AIADMK was 'belittling' the Tamil Nadu people's massive verdict in favour of the DMK-Congress led secular alliance in the recent Lok Sabha polls, “by dubbing our victory as won on false promises given to voters like lollipops  given to children”.

Stating that people's verdict in a democracy is like “God's verdict”, Stalin said the AIADMK to “conceal the pain of its comprehensive defeat” with DMK and its allies having swept 38 of the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies, barring Vellore, which went to the polls last May (in TN and Puducherry), now sought to trivialize the DMK's victory with a mean slogan that “we cheated the people with false promises”.

He said by winning nine of the 22 Assembly bye-elections, the AIADMK might have managed to keep itself in power in the state “by a whisker”, but “it is the DMK that permanently resides in the hearts of people and are looking for a change in government,” even as the DMK is committed to democratic means.

In an appeal to the voters ahead of the August 5 LS election from Vellore, which was earlier cancelled and in which the DMK has again fielded its nominee Kathir Anand, the DMK president charged that on the contrary that it was the AIADMK that was continuing to take people for a ride, with “empty announcements and loud pronouncements” but hardly anything implemented at ground level.

Alleging that it was the AIADMK which spent “huge sums” of money during the Lok Sabha polls, with the help of the BJP at the Centre, Mr Stalin said despite that the AIADMK could manage to win just one LS seat in Theni and that too with a thin margin after having pumped in so much cash there. “By maligning the DMK with charge of cash-for-votes in Vellore and getting the election stopped there, they (AIADMK) hoped to spoil the DMK's chances in all other constituencies”, but the people's resounding mandate foiled all such attempts, said Stalin.

Quoting from a recent CAG report, Mr Stalin said the AIADMK's poor governance was evidenced by the fact that Tamil Nadu's total debt now stood at a staggering Rs 3,26,000 crore. The state's debt in the last four years of AIADMK rule alone has been put at Rs 1,86,000 crore, the DMK leader pointed out.
