Captain Vijayakanth to listen to his lieutenants

DMK secured mere 6.1 per cent of the vote share and even the PMK, contesting alone, got 5.3 per cent.

Chennai: After losing all the seats in the just concluded state Assembly polls, DMDK chief Vijayakanth is all set to hear the views of his party office bearers beginning Monday to find reason for his party’s worst ever performance in the state polls that led to his defeat and a steep fall in the party’s voter share.

Vijayakanth. Who was also the chief ministerial candidate of the People’s Welfare Alliance consisting of MDMK, CPI (M), CPI and VCK and TMC, was pushed to third place in his Ulundurpet constituency. None of the candidates of the alliance won and only two candidates finished second. But the alliance claiming to be an alternative to AIADMK and DMK secured mere 6.1 per cent of the vote share and even the PMK, contesting alone, got 5.3 per cent.

DMDK, which had polled highest of 10.08 per cent in 2009 Lok Sabha polls and lowest of 5.19 per cent in 2014 Lok Sabha polls, got a mere 2.4 per cent of voter share after contesting in 104 seats. “It is a shocking result. We had got over 10 per cent of votes when we had contested alone in 2009 Lok Sabha polls. In this election, we had got little over six per cent as an alliance,” a senior DMDK leader said.

He added that Captain would meet party office bearers to take stock of the situation. “He will be meeting leaders from all the districts separately in the coming days,” the leader noted. Though the DMDK led alliance failed to win a single seat, it had played the role of spoiler in 88 constituencies including 58 seats won by AIADMK across the state where the votes polled by the alliance candidates was higher than the victory margin.
