Karnataka House panel to curb media, really?

Both Houses of legislature were set to discuss state Budget, but legislators spent a lot of time targeting media for tarnishing their image.

Bengaluru: The media—both print and electronic—turned the favourite whipping horse of lawmakers of Karnataka as they put important issues like drought or the city’s crumbling infrastructure on the backburner to set up a House committee to rein in the fourth estate and curtail its freedom on Wednesday.

Both Houses of legislature were scheduled to discuss the state Budget, but legislators spent a lot of time targeting the media for “tarnishing” their image.

While the upper House spent over an hour in media bashing, the lower House witnessed vitriolic attacks almost through the day, ending with Speaker K B Koliwad announcing constitution of a House committee to propose rules to govern the media.

Whither freedom of press, the critical cornerstone of democracy?
