Chennai: Political functionaries of both ruling AIADMK and opposition DMK have started work related to local body polls. State election commission had also invited suggestions from political parties on ongoing delimitation exercise.
In Chennai, majority of the former councillors have also began their meetings with the ward and zonal secretaries. In the wake of performance in RK Nagar bypoll both the ruling AIADMK and the DMK have already analysed the vote bank and the performance of local functionaries.
Meanwhile party functionaries are now frequenting the Ripon Buildings seeking the names of the streets and wards that will be added to the new wards in the wake of delimitation exercise.
In areas like Manali, Alandur, Perungudi and Madhavaram the corporation has fixed a population of 15,000 to 20,000 to come under a ward. In case of core city areas like Tondiarpet and Teynampet zones the wards average population is likely to be around 43,000, corporation sources said.
“The zonal secretaries of both the parties have now begun the preliminary works like voters verification and identification of locations where public meetings and wall paintings can be done before the announcement of civic polls. And we are closely monitoring the developments in the rival camps”, said Sukumar Babu, a former councillor and a supporter of TTV Dhinkaran. “We are ready for polls but we are also anticipating for the fall of this government any time,” he added.
