Green salam' for CPM conferences
Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretariat has enforced green protocol for all party conferences being held in the run up to 22nd party Congress of CPM. CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan directed party leaders to avoid flex boards and use recyclable material and environment friendly propaganda material for the conferences. The party has asked the organisers to ensure that billboards, banners, decoration material, plates and glasses are all environment friendly. Through this the message of environment protection could be given effectively to the people besides party comrades could also set an example for everyone to emulate.
The decision has been taken in the wake of grave environmental issues being faced by the state. All political parties, mass and class organisations should be vigilant. Kodiyeri said LDF government’s Haritha Keralam project has been widely received by the people. The party and mass organisations have been in the forefront to participate in activities associated with the Mission which are mainly aimed at environment conservation, he said. Many say while major political parties do not lose any opportunity to boast about their commitment to environment protection, when it comes to conferences and meetings there is extensive and competitive use of flex boards and plastic propaganda material causing damage to ecology. It is in this backdrop that the CPM wants to prove that it is a party with a difference.
Normally every political party expresses willingness to restrict use of PVC flex, plastic material for propaganda with the condition that their rivals should also take a similar initiative. But the CPM leadership wants to lead from the front on issues concerning environment protection. During the last party state conference held in Alappuzha in 2015, CPM had completely avoided plastic material including flags and festoons, flex boards and other propaganda material. Instead of plastic rope, coir rope was used for hoisting the flag at the state conference venue. Plastic cups and plates were not used for serving food and water to the delegates. In place of mineral water bottles, boiled water was supplied to the delegates throughout the conference. The CPM wants to enforce similar restrictions this time around for all conferences.
