Local body election will be held soon: Sellur K Raju

The minister said that about 32, 72, 291 farmers have been provided Rs. 20, 117 crore interest-free crop loan, this year.

CHENNAI: The local bodies elections will soon be held in TN, according to cooperation minister Sellur K. Raju.

The preparatory work to hold the local bodies is in full swing, the minister said on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting with cooperative registrar and additional and joint registrars here on the implementation of ongoing schemes, Mr. Raju recalled that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had already informed the Assembly that the local body elections would be conducted in the state soon.

"Accordingly, work is on to hold the election soon, Mr. Sellur Raju said in Chennai food and co operative secretary Dayananth kataria, registrar of co operatives G. Govindaraj participated.

The minister said that about 32, 72, 291 farmers have been provided Rs. 20, 117 crore interest-free crop loan, this year. "In addition, nearly Rs. 2, 19, 536 crore has been given as jewel loan. We have waived off small and medium farmers' cooperative loans as we had promised in our election manifesto," he said. Mr. Raju further said that following the computerisation of cooperative banks, the deposit amount has increased to Rs 52,000 crore from Rs 26, 000 crore during the previous DMK rule. The Cooperative department will open petrol bunks in new areas, he said.

To a question, he replied that there is no contradiction in the views expressed by the CM and dairy development minister K. T. Rajenthra Bhalaji about milk price increase. "Though a few cooperative milk societies are running profitably, a large number of societies is running on loss," he said.
