KPCC member wants reformer Roopa back as DIG prisons
BENGALURU: The secretary of labour wing of the KPCC, A. Muthu Manickam, has requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to bring back DIG and Commissioner for Transport and Road Safety, D. Roopa, as DIG (Prisons) to initiate reforms in jail administration and bring back public confidence in the justice system.
In the letter, Mr Manickam has also alleged that former DGP&IG (Prisons) H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao had flouted prison rules to appease convict and AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala. “Mr Rao had allowed Sasikala and Ilavarasi to go scot free out of the prison for shopping at M.G. Road, Jayanagar Shopping Complex and Commercial Street after wearing burkha. Sasikala and Ilavarasi have obviously misused the government machinery by way of using the official car of the jail authority to go out of the Jail, during dark and it is told that the car enters the jail premises to facilitate Sasikala and Ilavarasi to go out for shopping. Sasikala wore silk salwar and Kameez and not white saris (prison clothes),” he stated.
“In response to the complaint filed by Roopa, Rao gave an explanation through the media that Roopa was unaware of prisons rules and how the department functioned. Had he acted promptly on the complaint, the issue would have not been blown out of proportion,” he said, adding that criminal cases should be registered against Sasikala, Rao and DIG Krishna Kumar, who was prison superintendent.
