Alathur MP Remya Haridas opts out of accepting car gift

Alathur MP Remya Haridas has come up with a Facebook post late on Sunday informing that she does not want a car.

Thiruvananthapuram: Alathur MP Remya Haridas will get a luxury car as a gift from the state Youth Congress. The key of the Mahindra Marazzo car worth Rs 14 lakh will be handed over to Remya by Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala on August 9.

But, Remya has come up with a Facebook post late on Sunday informing that she does not want a car.

KPCC president Mullapally Ramachandran as well as a section of Youth Congress leaders had not welcomed the idea of accepting the gift. It is said that Mullapally was not informed about the decision taken by the Alathur mandalam committee of the Youth Congress to launch a fund drive to buy the car. A sum of Rs 1,000 was to be collected from YC members for the purpose.

Congress MLA Anil Akkara said that Remya had taken a loan of Rs 7 lakh from the Punjab National Bank which was repaid by the local Youth Congress leaders during the Lok Sabha elections as the bank started recovery proceedings. It was difficult for her to get a bank loan for a vehicle, he said.

The funds collected will be given to the parliamentary committee by July 25.

A section of the Congress leaders says that since Remya gets Rs 1.90 lakh, including salary and allowances, as MP, she can get a bank loan. But banks may refuse to give her a loan due to her previous records, it is stated.
