Over 1,000 dwelling units to be built at Moolakothalam

The houses would be built at Moolakothalam though the TN Slum Clearance Board at a cost of Rs 138.29 crore, he told the Assembly on Wednesday.

Chennai: The state government has proposed to construct about 1,044 dwelling units with all modern facilities for the poor and downtrodden under the housing for all scheme, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has informed.

The houses would be built at Moolakothalam though the TN Slum Clearance Board at a cost of Rs 138.29 crore, he told the Assembly on Wednesday. Mr. Panneerselvam said the site for the housing project at Moolakothalam, here, does not pertain to the memorial of Tamil linguistic freedom fighters.

He asserted that the memorial for the freedom fighters Thalamuthu and Natarajan were 300 meters away from the site identified for the project and that the housing scheme would not affect their memorials.

He also informed that the golden jubilee of renaming the erstwhile State of Madras as Tamil Nadu (on January 14, 1969) would be held in a grand manner in the city.

“A mega event will be organised in Chennai to commemorate the the naming of the State. Already various competitions like essay writing, elocution, etc. are being held and prizes will be distributed to the winners,” he said.
