Oommen Chandy tells A K Antony to hold organisational polls
Thiruvananthapuram: Congress ‘A’ group has reiterated its demand before senior Congress leader A. K. Antony to hold organizational elections as promised by the AICC leadership. Mr Antony, who was in town, heard the views of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran separately on the latest row over the appointment of DCC presidents. Mr Chandy called on Mr Antony at his home early Tuesday morning. It is learnt that Mr Chandy conveyed his disappointment of his group on not getting adequate number of DCC president posts compared to the rival ‘I’ camp.
At Mr Chandy’s talks with the AICC leadership last month during the run-up to the DCC presidents’ appointment, he had insisted on holding organizational elections. Mr Chandy had agreed that technically the status quo could be maintained on DCC presidents but the organizational elections would have to be held as promised and he would not mind waiting until Uttar Pradesh elections are over early next year. “Congress is going through a lean phase. Unfortunately the top crème of the leadership don’t have any apprehension on the party’s strength when the party workers are wavering”, a top Congress leader told DC.
Mr Sudheeran told reporters in the evening that the high-power Political Affairs Committee meeting was postponed as per the inconvenience cited by Mr Chandy. “The date of PAC meeting will be finalized according to Mr Chandy’s convenience”, said Mr Sudheeran. He is expected to attend the installation ceremony of T. Siddique as Kozhikode DCC president on Wednesday. Mr Antony will return to New Delhi on Christmas eve after attending a Karunakaran memorial meet.
