Tirupati LS bypolls: Jagan’s physiotherapist is YSRC candidate

An MLC post has been promised to Balli Kalyan Chakarvarthy, son of late MP Durga Prasad Rao, for giving up MP seat to another candidate

VIJAYAWADA: Ruling YSR Congress has finalised physiotherapist Dr Gurumurthy as its candidate for Tirupati Lok Sagha byelection. An MLC’s post has been promised to Balli Kalyan Chakarvarthy, son of late MP Durga Prasad Rao, for giving up his father’s Tirupati MP seat to another party candidate.

Durga Prasad, sitting MP of YSRC, died due to Covid-19. Party leaders and politicians expected allotment of the bypoll ticket to his son following the tradition. But Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy surprisingly selected Dr. Gurumurthy, who was his personal physiotherapist during the padayatra. Dr Gurumurthy accompanied Reddy from November 2017 to January 2019.

According to sources, Jagan had promised a good position to Dr. Gurumurthy. Following this, the CM held a meeting with the kin of late MP at the CM’s camp office in Tadepalli seeking their cooperation. The late MP’s family members agreed to the proposal of Jagan.

Municipal Administration Minister Botsa Satyanarayana, who accompanied the deceased MP’s kin, told media that the wife and son of late Durga Prasad met the Chief Minister who extended his support to the family of Durga Prasad Rao. The CM promised MLC post to the son of late MP whenever the first seat falls vacant in the legislative council.

Speaking on the occasion, Balli Kalyan Chakravarthy said Jagan Mohan Reddy has stood by his family ever since his father died due to Covid-19. He said the Chief Minister has promised MLC post whenever one falls vacant. His family would be grateful to the CM forever, he said. He said that he would strive hard for the victory of YSRC party in the upcoming by-polls.
Main opposition Telugu Desam has already announced former union minister Panabaka Lakshmi as its candidate for Tirupati MP seat by-election. Meanwhile, Congress party is going to conduct a preparatory meeting led by APCC president Dr. Sake Sailajanath at Tirupati on Saturday to finalise the party’s candidate for Tirupati MP by-election.

According to the party sources, Congress will select six-time MP Dr. Chinta Mohan as party’s candidate and will officially his name after the meeting.
Hence, YSRC wanted to field a much stronger candidate to retain the seat. will officially announce after the meeting.
