Telangana HC agrees to hear pleas on civic polls

At the same time, the identification of the voters belonging to SCs, STs, BCs and the public representatives were not put on notice.

Hyderabad: Justice A. Rajasheker Reddy of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a batch of writ petitions seeking a stay on holding municipal elections in the state on the ground that the entire pre-poll process prior to holding the municipal elections has not been done in tune with the Telangana Municipal Rules individually.

Earlier, a single judge had stayed holding of the elections in 73 municipalities and the common grievances of the petitioners were that the doubts that were raised were not cleared, delimitation was not in consonance with the Telangana Municipal Rules and the voters’ list had discrepancies.

At the same time, the identification of the voters belonging to SCs, STs, BCs and the public representatives were not put on notice.

Additional Advocate General J. Ramachandra Rao informed the Judge that two PILs filed challenging the entire pre-poll process prior to holding municipal elections have been dismissed by the division bench headed by the Chief Justice of the High Court.

He urged the court to take up the hearing of all the petitions at one go as the grievances of all petitioners are common.

Counsels for the petitioners vehemently opposed the submissions of Mr Rao and insisted upon the court to adjudicate each and every writ petition in its individual capacity.

Accordingly, the Judge agreed to hear the writ petitions individually.
