Hyderabad: The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) recently conducted an analysis of Telangana's sitting Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) facing criminal cases.
Criminal Cases: Out of the 118 sitting MLAs analysed, 72 (61%) have declared criminal cases against themselves.
Serious Criminal Cases: 46 (39%) sitting MLAs have declared serious criminal cases.
Attempted Murder Cases: 7 sitting MLAs have declared cases related to attempted murder (IPC section 307).
Cases Related to Crime Against Women: 4 sitting MLAs have declared cases related to crimes against women, with 1 MLA having declared a case related to rape (IPC Section-376).
Party-wise Analysis (Criminal Cases):
- BRS: 59 (58%) out of 101 MLAs.
- AIMIM: 6 (86%) out of 7 MLAs.
- INC: 4 (67%) out of 6 MLAs.
- BJP: 2 (100%) MLAs.
- Independent MLAs: 1 (50%) out of 2.
Party-wise Analysis (Serious Criminal Cases):
- BRS: 38 (38%) out of 101 MLAs.
- AIMIM: 2 (29%) out of 7 MLAs.
- INC: 3 (50%) out of 6 MLAs.
- BJP: 2 (100%) MLAs.
- Independent MLAs: 1 (50%) out of 2.
The ADR's analysis demonstrates that a substantial portion of Telangana's sitting MLAs face criminal charges, including serious offences. The data offers an important perspective on the state's political scenario, emphasising the need for ongoing scrutiny and potential reforms.
