YSRC leadership's focus in Chittoor shifts to election of ZPP and MPP chiefs

The YSRC leadership is also finalizing the lists of candidates for ZPP vice-chairperson and the 65 MPPs

TIRUPATI: After making a clean sweep of the mandal and zilla praja parishad elections in Chittoor, the YSR Congress leadership shifts its focus to the elections for chairperson and vice-chairperson of the ZPP and 65 MPPs in the district.

As the ZPP chairperson seat has been made a general seat, the party is keen on fielding its nominee. It has almost cleared a name and asked the ministers and MLAs from the district to take care in getting the candidate elected without any hassle.

Sources said the party would field Srinivasulu Govindappa Vasu, who won the V Kota ZPTC seat. Srinivasulu reportedly has the blessings of Panchayat Raj minister P Ramachandra Reddy.

Meanwhile, the YSRC leadership is also finalizing the lists of candidates for ZPP vice-chairperson and the 65 MPPs. Out of the 65 ZPTC seats, YSRC won 63 seats, of which 30 were unanimous and 33 were elected on Sunday. The elections for two seats were withheld following death of candidates. In all, the ruling party has 63 out of 65 ZPTC seats in its account.

Similarly, out of the 886 MPTC seats, elections were held for 419 seats while 433 saw unanimous elections. Among the 419 seats that went to poll on Sunday, the ruling party bagged 389, while the Telugu Desam got 25 and independents grabbed 5 seats. Of the unanimously elected candidates, 410 belong to YSRC, eight to TD, one to CPI and 14 independents. Election was not held for 34 seats due to various reasons.

The ruling party secured a clear majority in all the 65 MPPs. It is expected that there will be unanimity within the party as regards the elections for the MPPs.

However, sources said the YSRC’s elections coordination team comprising the district’s ministers and senior leaders are taking care in selecting the candidates for the posts of president and vice-presidents of the MPPs fast, so as to avoid last-minute jostling within the party.

Meanwhile, the state election commission has issued a notification for election of the president and vice president for MPPs, and chairperson and vice-chairperson for ZPP. The MPP polls would be held at 3pm on September 24, Friday, and the elections for chairpersons and vice-chairmen will take place at 3pm the next day.
