Big competition for Zilla Parishad chief posts

The Anantapur ZP civic chief post was reserved for SC General during the polls process last year

ANANTAPUR: With the YSRC winning a landslide majority in ZPTC polls, competition for the ZP chairperson post is high in the district. Anantapur chairperson seat is reserved for a BC woman and there are over seven BC women aspirants in the party for this post.

Aspirants from the BC general category are trying to influence the high command based on caste equations.

The Anantapur ZP civic chief post was reserved for SC General during the polls process last year. But, some candidates approached court against the reservation of 59.85 per cent of the seats as against norms that stipulate this should not exceed 50 per cent.

The process was thus changed and Anantapur ZP chairperson seat was allotted for a BC woman.

Of a total of 63 ZPTC seats, polls were held for 62 and the YSRC bagged 60 seats while the TD confined itself to one seat and an independent candidate won a seat. Seven women ZPTC members won from the BC category in various mandals and are rooting for the chairperson seat.

The organisations of BCs – Yadava, Kuruba and Boya — sought a chairperson seat for each of these communities.

The district minister and Hindupur MP are from the Kuruba community, which is dominant in the district. Anantapur MP seat went to the Boya community. The Yadava association held a meeting and pleaded that the YSRC allot an ZP seat for them. Candidates from all the three communities were making efforts to influence the chief minister and other leaders to allot an ZP chairperson post for their respective communities.

Atmakur ZPTC member Girijamma was in the race. She had worked as corporator from 3rd division in Anantapur municipal corporation. Tanakal ZPTC member Jakkla Jyothi was in the race as her husband Jakkala Adisehsu is the YSRC state CEC member.

Sources said S Radhika, ZPTC member from Gooty mandal, was in the fray for the ZP chairperson post. Her husband Praveen Yadav gets his support mainly from Yadava organisations.

This was the second time the Anantapur ZP chairperson seat was allotted for women. Topudurthi Kavitha had served as ZP chairperson during 2006-11 when the Congress ruled the state.

Though the names of MPPs will be finalised by the MLAs or party in-charges in the district, YSRC sources said the ZP civic chief post will be finalised by the high command based on the equations at regional and state levels.
