Congress MPs from Tamil Nadu to join DMK\'s Delhi protest

Country was \"treading a dangerous path\" in the wake of the BJP-led Central government\'s recent actions in J&K.

CHENNAI: Congress MPs from Tamil Nadu will join the protest planned by DMK MPs in New Delhi on August 22 to condemn the 'murder of democracy' in Jammu and Kashmir, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, K. S. Azhagiri, said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at TNCC headquarters here after paying floral tributes to a portrait of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 75th birth anniversary, Azhagiri expressed concern that the country was "treading a dangerous path" in the wake of the BJP-led Central government's recent actions in J&K.

He recalled that Rajiv Gandhi had strained a lot for the welfare of the Sri Lankan Tamils and had taken several steps to resolve the ethnic issue in Sri Lanka. It was under Rajiv Gandhi's tenure that a big push was given to science and information technology (IT), Azhagiri pointed out.

To a question on the Nanguneri Assembly by-election, Azhagiri said the Congresss party had not yet discussed the issue with its ally DMK. When reporters persisted whether Congress will re-contest that seat as it was won by the national party in the last Assembly elections, Azhagiri said that will be decided by the party high command.
