Mocked' by Mayor, DMK councillors stage walkout
Chennai: Great Chennai corporation council on Saturday adopted a resolution condemning DMK legislators for mocking Tamil Nadu Speaker P. Dhanapal by conducting a mock Assembly session at Fort St. George on Friday.
Chennai Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy, who mooted the resolution, termed the behaviour of DMK ‘uncivilised’ and the resolution, a first of kind by the city council, also demanded the DMK leadership and the MLAs to apologise.
“The DMK MLAs should also give an undertaking that in future they would behave inside the Assembly”, Duraisamy said.
Even as the DMK council members led by opposition floor leader Subash Chandra Bose raised objections and staged a walkout, the Mayor read the resolution targeting the DMK MLAs and termed their behaviour “a disgrace to the state Assembly and its decorum.”
The resolution also emphasised that opposition MLAs were doing politics, as they were unable to stomach the good governance by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
“The MLAs often call the speaker in a defaming manner, howl at him and barge in to the well of the House. Aren’t these uncivilised act and if the remark related to Namakku naame rally of DMK has created an issue, the opposition should have walked out of the Assembly protesting against the Speaker and such an act would have been a regular convention”, he said.
Later in the day, the council also thanked the state government for making Tamil Nadu a power surplus state and congratulated Olympic medallists
P.V. Sindhu and Sakshi Malik for their splendid performance at Rio Olympics.
The council also adopted 50 resolutions related to civic administration.
