DMK convenes all party meeting on May 22
Chennai: The Opposition DMK has urged the state government to establish cordial ties with the new government to be in place in the neighbouring Karnataka soon, and obtain Cauvery water due for Tamil Nadu by June 12. The party has also convened an all-party meeting on Cauvery on May 22 to decide the next course of action on the issue.
“With a new secular government to be in place in Karnataka in two or three days’ time, the Chief Minister (Edappadi K. Palaniswami) should utilise the opportunity and establish cordial ties with the new government and obtain Cauvery water by June 12,” Mr Stalin urged.
Though the Supreme Court’s verdict strengthened Tamil Nadu’s case, Mr Palaniswami should also aim to get the Cauvery water by nurturing friendly ties with Karnataka, he added while speaking at a marriage function in Mayiladuthurai on Sunday.
In case the Tamil Nadu government failed to obtain Cauvery water, DMK and other opposition parties would be constrained to launch a massive agitation in TN with the support of the delta farmers, the DMK leader warned and reminded that the state was deprived of the Cauvery water for the last seven years.
The Supreme Court, Mr Stalin said, had ensured a good legal solution. He called upon the state government to strive and obtain the water by June 12, the scheduled date for opening of the Mettur dam for irrigation.
The DMK working president will chair the meeting of opposition parties on Cauvery at 10 am at his party headquarters - Anna Arivalayam on May 22. The meeting will discuss the Supreme Court giving the nod to Centre’s draft scheme on Cauvery water management and directing the BJP-led government in New Delhi to implement it before the start of the monsoon season.
