1.1 per cent separated DMK from AIADMK: M Karunanidhi
Chennai: DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Friday said just 1.1 per cent votes separated the DMK front from the AIADMK and thanked the people who have voted for his party alliance in the Assembly elections.
In a statement here, Karunanidhi said “Though, the difference is 1.1 per cent, AIADMK had become the ruling party and we have become the opposition. But, DMK is the principal opposition party with 89 members, which has never happened till now.”
Besides, he also thanked the people of Tiruvarur, who have given him 1,21,473 votes and made him win by the highest margin in the state. In the Assembly elections held on May 16, the DMK polled 31.6 per cent votes and its ally the Congress got 6.4 per cent. Besides, the party’s allies, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi got 0.5 per cent, Indian Union Muslim League 0.7 per cent and Puthiya Thamzihagam 0.5 per cent. The total votes obtained by the DMK front is 39.7, while the AIADMK secured 40.8 per cent. DMK’s parent body the Dravidar Kazhagam blamed MDMK leader Vaiko for the DMK’s defeat. DK president K. Veeramani said Vaiko misguided the People’s Welfare Alliance despite his advice to join hands with the DMK. He also faulted the VCK, Left and PMK for forming separate alliances.
