Amma canteens, water centre back on track

The Amma canteen near Egmore eye hospital, which lost its roof during the cyclone, is now operated at full pace and has started feeding public.

Chennai: After DC carried reports of Amma canteens and Amma drinking water centres not working at several places, Chennai corporation authorities are now attending the canteens and Amma water centers affected during the recent cyclone Vardah.

The Amma canteen near Egmore eye hospital, which lost its roof during the cyclone, is now operated at full pace and has started feeding public. Similarly Amma drinking water centre on Barracks road near Perambur was temporarily closed down. Following DC reports, it was repaired and reopened on Monday.

“We are also attending the other canteens that damaged during the cyclone and there are more than 300 Amma canteens and 20 amma drinking water centres maintained by the state,” a corporation official said. Both Amma canteen and Amma drinking water schemes were brainchild of former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa aimed to provide quality food and water for the downtrodden at a cheap price.

The drinking water dispensing units function on reverse osmosis technology was initially proposed at 100 localities. The project is implemented in 20 locations and will be expanded in a phased manner.
