Chandy's interview to DC “on the rails”

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Unlike many politicians who get provoked by uncomfortable questions and even react angrily, Oommen Chandy was clearly a leader with a difference.

It was very rare that he raised his voice while replying to questions from media persons. Like any common man, media persons irrespective of their position or organisation, could approach him any time. If he didn’t like a question or didn’t want to reply, Chandy would pass a "mischievous" smile which said it all.

On the occasion of one of the anniversaries of Trivandrum edition of Deccan Chronicle, it was decided to have an interview with chief minister Chandy. A DC correspondent called the chief minister over the phone. It was picked by his PA who promptly gave it to Chandy.

"Sir we need a brief interview with you for our anniversary edition," the correspondent said.

"Yes you can call me next week," he said. But when he was told that the interview was to appear the next day, Chandy replied;"Oh! ok. But right now I am travelling by train."

Sir can we do it over the phone? the reporter asked.

"I have no problem. You may ask your questions. Go ahead," he said.

After two questions the call got disconnected. Hesitatingly the reporter called him again and this time Chandy took the call himself and resumed the interview.
And while he was replying to a question, the call got cut yet again. Now the reporter was sure that Chandy would discontinue the interview.

Mustering all the courage, the reporter dialled again and said apologetically; "I am extremely sorry Sir. The call is getting cut frequently."

Pat came Chandy's reply; “No problem. As I told you earlier, I am on the train and there will be a range problem. But you carry on.”

The call got snapped at least half a dozen times, but the former chief minister helped us complete the interview, answering all questions. Perhaps it is this patience of his and understanding of others needs and requirements, that made him one of the most popular leaders of Kerala.

The unprecedented outpouring of emotions, affection, love and respect witnessed during Oommen Chandy’s final journey, was in a way a befitting reciprocation by the people of Kerala who loved him immensely.
