With Congress sentiment in mind, HD Kumaraswamy defers oath

The JD (S) leader told the media here that he was given 15 days to prove his strength on the floor of the Assembly by Mr Vala.

Bengaluru: An hour after outgoing Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s resignation, Governor Vajubhai Vala invited Mr Kumaraswamy to take oath as the new Chief Minister.

The JD (S) leader told the media here that he was given 15 days to prove his strength on the floor of the Assembly by Mr Vala. He was set to take oath between noon and 1:05 PM on Monday. He, however, put off the swearing-in function to Wednesday as Monday marks the death anniversary of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and both Mrs Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi would not be able to make it to the function on that day.

He said soon after forming the government, a coordination committee comprising Mr Rahul Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mr K C Venugopal and Mr Mallikarjun Kharge would be formed to ensure smooth functioning of the government. Expressing confidence that the coalition government would complete its five year term, he said he would not allow the BJP to indulge in horse-trading of legislators.

“We know that the BJP will still try to break the coalition by poaching legislators. We will not allow that to happen at any cost. Besides, tonight, JD(S) and Congress leaders will hold a meeting to finalise list of names for the ministry. The entire administration would be monitored by coordination committee”, he said.
