Thiruvananthapuram: The Union Sports Ministry has stepped in after Indian footballer C.K. Vineeth was sacked from his job with the Accountant-General’s office due to lack of attendance.
Sports Minister Vijay Goel has ordered a probe into the sacking. Mr Goel, who promised to write to the A-G’s office to seek the details of the issue, said that the priority of the sportsperson was to win medals for the country, and not to worry about attendance in office.
Vineeth was appointed to the A-G's office in 2012 under the sports quota. The AG’ s office said was that Vineeth’s probation could be extended beyond four years and that he had completed four years on May 6, 2016. As per the order issued by the AG’s Office, Vineeth has been terminated from service with effect from May 7, 2016 under rule 5 of the central civil services (temporary service) rules, an consolidated instructions on probation/confirmation in central services.
Vineeth had said that he was unable to attend office due to the busy training schedule and Bengaluru FC matches. His probation period was extended earlier, but he was still unable to complete it.
State Sports Minister A.C. Moideen and Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala had written to the Comptroller and Auditor-General Shashi Kant Sharma urging him to reconsider the decision.
