BCs and minorities getting due recognition: YSRC

BC, SC, ST and minority nominees to head civic bodies

VIJAYAWADA: YSR Congress on Thursday claimed that choosing 78 of 86 nominees from those belonging to BC, SC, ST and minorities communities as heads of corporations and municipalities was unprecedented in the country’s history.

Party general secretary Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy said that BCs, SCs, STs and minorities constitute over 70 per cent of the population and the YSRC government was giving a proportionate representation to them.

Speaking to the media here, Ramakrishna Reddy said that 40 posts of mayors and chairpersons were given to BCs, 12 for minorities while women were given 52 seats overall. He said it was unprecedented and way ahead of the so-called BC states.

He stated that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had made it clear that people in majority should be given due representation. He stated that unlike during the TD government, which used BCs as a vote bank, the Chief Minister had given recognition to weaker sections in tune with his contention that ‘BCs are Backbone Class’.

Speaking of Mydukur municipality, Ramakrishna Reddy stated that the party had won because the Jana Sena councillor remained neutral and ex-officio members had backed YSRC. He said that they had not misused power anywhere.

Recalling the 2014 local body elections, he said TD leaders abused their power to lure opposition candidates into TD, something which the YSRC would never resort to.

On ZPTC and MPTC polls, Ramakrishna Reddy urged the SEC to conduct them as early as possible as there were no more legal hurdles.
