CPM performs last rites for PWA, declares bypoll candidate
Chennai: The People’s Welfare Alliance formed before the 2016 Assembly elections broke into fragments with the CPM on Saturday announcing its candidate for the RK Nagar bypoll despite the other two constituents CPI and VCK opposing the move.
The Left unity in the state too suffered a major setback with both the leading Communist parties deciding to take divergent electoral routes.
As Thol. Thirumavalavan’s VCK has openly demonstrated its leanings towards the DMK after the Assembly polls and CPI vacillating in continuing with the fight for alternative politics in the state, the CPM decided to hold on to its aim of building an alternative politics in the state against the DMK, AIADMK, Congress and BJP.
After DMK working president M.K. Stalin’s open appeal for support in the RK Nagar bypoll, both the VCK and CPI were against fielding a candidates in RK Nagar, while the CPM was determined to enter the fray. Commenting on the CPM decision, Thirumavalavan said his party is firm on not contesting the bypoll, making it clear VCK would not support CPM in the bypoll.
Announcing R. Loganathan as the CPM candidate, party state secretary G.Ramakrishnan painted the DMK and AIADMK with the same brush and said both the governments headed by both the parties ruling the state did not find solutions to basic necessities and did not stop the honour killings or oppression of Dalits.
The AIADMK factions are indulging in power struggle and the BJP is trying to gain a foothold in the state through the backdoor using the prevailing circumstances.”
It is the duty of democratic forces to protect democracy and state’s rights besides working for the state’s development and opposing corruption. Contesting in RK Nagar is part of the larger objective”, he said.
He said the AIADMK government is supporting the BJP government which had refused to form the Cauvery Management Board and rejected funds for drought and cyclone relief.
He appealed to all the Leftist democratic organisations and other democratic forces who want alternative politics against the anti-people policies of the DMK, Congress, BJP and Congress should support its candidate in the RK Nagar bypoll.
There was no progress or development in people’s life due to DMK and AIADMK governments in the state. No solution had been found for the basic necessities of the people including education, health, drinking water, employment and housing, he said.
