BJP going against Constitution for political gains, says Karunanidhi
Chennai: Charging the BJP-led government at the centre with acting against democracy and Constitution for political gains, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi said the centre should focus its attention on people’s issues.
The DMK leader said the centre should have asked Karnataka to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as per the verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. Instead, it had made a U-turn on the formation of Cauvery Management Board and refusing to form the CMB, despite the Supreme Court order to do so. The centre is acting against Tamil Nadu to win Assembly elections in Karnataka, he added.
He also said the BJP government is moving towards taking up the Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue to generate religious passions. Citing the participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Ram Leela, the DMK leader said the Prime Minister started and ended his speech with slogans of ‘Jai Shriram’, ignoring that the country is a secular republic.
The centre had identified 25 acres of land for setting up museum for Ramayan at Ayodhya, just 15 km from the disputed site. Union Minister Mahesh Sharma had also announced that an International Ramayan Conference would be held at Ayodhya.
