CPI to hold protest on September 20 in Khammam

Cases filed against CPI leaders for threatening CI

Khammam: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has announced the holding of dharnas and rasta rokos in all mandal centres in the district on September 20 to protest against the filing of cases against CPI state secretary Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao and Telangana Rythu Sangham state president B. Hemanth Rao.

The party will submit a memorandum in this regard to police commissioner Vishnu Warrier on Monday.

The issue arose during the Ganesh idol immersion in Edulapuram village when, CPI leaders alleged, TRS workers assaulted their members and the police, led by Khammam Rural mandal circle inspector T. Srinivasa Rao, failed to take action.

Following the incident, CPI leaders led by Dandi Bhaskar and Venkat Reddy went to the Rural police station to lodge a complaint against the TRS workers.

Venkat Reddy said, “The CI refused to accept our complaint and reminded us of the murder of (TRS leader) Tammineni Krishnaiah. We condemn the threatening attitude of the police official.” The CI is extending support to TRS leader Bellam Venu, Venkat Reddy said.

The party alleged that several cases, including one under the SC/ ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, were filed against CPI leaders. Later, CPI state secretary Sambasiva Rao and Rythu Sangham state president Hemanth Rao met Srinivasa Rao but it only resulted in heated arguments.

Sambasiva Rao said, “CI Srinivasa Rao should do his job in a responsible and fair manner. We will show our might if he (CI) creates troubles for us.” Hemanth Rao said, “We will undress his uniform if he shows a partisan attitude.”

The police then filed cases against the two leaders under IPC sections for obscenity, defamation and criminal intimidation. Sambasiva Rao said that the cases would not deter them and they will continue to fight against the CI.
