Left parties to release candidates' lists today

The final list of candidates will be released tomorrow, CPI (M) state secretary, G. Ramakrishnan told reporters.

Chennai: The Left parties, CPI-M and CPI, each contesting 25 seats in the May 16 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, will release their lists of candidates on Monday.

The parties are contesting as part of the People’s Welfare Alliance that is in alliance with Vijayakanth-led DMDK and TMC of G.K. Vasan. “We will be deciding the candidates contesting for the 25 seats allotted to us in the state committee meeting to be held today.

The final list of candidates will be released tomorrow,” CPI (M) state secretary, G. Ramakrishnan told reporters. According to party sources, eight sitting MLAs would be nominated again while senior leader and central committee member U. Vasuki would be contesting from Madurai West. CPI secretary R Mutharasan said party’s state governing council will decide on the candidates, who would be ratified by the state council that meets on Monday in presence of senior leaders, including general secretary Sudhakara Reddy and national secretary D. Raja.

VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan said that the first list of his party’s candidate would be released on Monday. “There are many cadres wanting to contest the polls. They had sought extension of time to file nomination seeking party ticket,” he said, adding that as many as 128 cadres have so far filed applications seeking ticket. “We will release our first list of candidates on Monday,” he said.

Thirumavalavan was expected to contest from the Kattumanarkovil assembly seat. Of the 234 assembly segments, DMDK is contesting in 104, MDMK 29, Tamil Maanila Congress 26. VCK, CPI(M) and CPI are contesting in 25 seats each.
