JD(S) hopes for Monday miracle to send its man to Rajya Sabha

High Court, Speaker likely to act on plea to disqualify 7 rebel legislators.

Bengaluru: The Janata Dal (Secular) has pinned its hopes on either the Speaker of the state Legislative Assembly or the high court coming to its rescue on Monday on the disqualification of its seven rebel MLAs, who could cost it the election of its candidate to the Rajya Sabha.

“We are expecting some good news from either the court or Speaker K B Koliwad, who has issued a notice to all the seven rebel JD(S) legislators, who cross- voted during the Rajya Sabha polls in 2016, to appear before him on Monday,” said a JDS legislator, revealing that both party supremo, H D Deve Gowda and state chief, H D Kumaraswamy were working on a strategy to get the magical number of 45 to send its candidate, B M Farooq to the Rajya Sabha with the help of independent legislators.

The JD(S) is hoping the seven rebel MLAs will be stopped from voting in the March 23 Rajya Sabha poll, and prevent the Congress party from getting it's third candidate elected.

"We are in touch with all legislators, who believe in secularism, to support Mr Farooq, " the MLA added.

Meanwhile, going by party sources Mr Deve Gowda and Mr Kumaraswamy are likely to hold a crucial meeting on either Sunday or Monday to discuss the coming RS poll.

“The party has full faith in the judiciary and some miracle may happen in the next 48 hours,” they added.

The JD(S) may be hanging on to slim hope as the Speaker seemed reluctant to give in to its demand for disqualification of the seven rebels before the RS poll when contacted by Deccan Chronicle.
