Congress, TD ties in Telangana, AP come to fore

The TD and the Congress had decided not to have any alliance in the upcoming Lok Sabha and AP Assembly elections.

Hyderabad: With the latest political developments at the national-level, the alliance between the Congress and the TD in both Telugu states has come into focus.

Top leaders of anti-BJP parties including Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Chief Ministers N. Chandrababu Naidu (AP), Mamata Benarjee (West Bengal), NCP Chief Sharad Pawar and others held a meeting at Delhi last week and decided to have a pre-poll alliance with possible parties at the state-level. They will meet shortly to take a final decision on this issue.

After the terrible debacle of the People’s Front headed by the Congress in the recent Telangana Assembly elections, both the TD and the Congress had decided not to have any alliance in the upcoming Lok Sabha and AP Assembly elections.

The TD and the Congress had decided not to have any alliance in the upcoming Lok Sabha and AP Assembly elections. This was announced openly by leaders of both parties. Telangana Congress leaders attributed their virtual wash-out in the recent Assembly elections to the alliance with TD.

But after the Delhi meeting, discussions have begun in both Congress and TD about a possible alliance in the upcoming elections. Some Congress leaders were of the view that Assembly elections were different from Lok Sabha elections, in that local issues got highlighted in the former and national issues in the latter. One leader said, “One cannot anticipate that Assembly results would be repeated in the Lok Sabha elections.”

However, some Congress leaders are opposing the alliance with TD in the Lok Sabha elections. TPCC Treasurer Gudur Narayana Reddy said that the high command had to take a decision on this, but before deciding, it should keep in mind the results of the recent Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, CPI Telangana state unit secretary Chada Venkata Reddy has written a letter to TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, seeking Khammam and Bhongir Lok Sabha seats for the party.
