Is Thol Thirumavalavan moving towards DMK?
Chennai: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan appears to be moving towards the DMK going by the party’s decision to form ‘a broad-based secular alliance’ for Parliament elections.
The party had portrayed the ruling AIADMK as being close to the BJP government at the Centre, clearly indicating that ‘the secular alliance’ tag does not apply to the AIADMK. Thirumavalavan’s assertion that VCK would not quit the PWA could mean that he intends to take the entire PWA with him to the DMK fold.
VCK usually hails Ambedkar and Periyar, but the addition of Kamaraj in the list of leaders against communalism could be an indication that it wanted the Congress to be part of the broad-based alliance.
DMK chief M.Karunanidhi had issued a series of statements against the BJP government and he had also spoken about the joining together of ‘secular, democratic forces’ at the national level. A similar euphemism has been used by the VCK, signalling that it is warming up towards the DMK.
The VCK also passed resolutions backing Karunanidhi’s statement against sale of ‘Gangajal’ in post offices and introducing Sanskrit in CBSE schools, underlining that their policies are similar.
However, Thirumavalavan’s declaration comes too early as Parliament elections are three more years away. Many more changes could take place in the time before the Parliament polls. It is not clear if DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin wants the presence of VCK in the DMK alliance.
Thirumavalavan’s announcement could also turn out be disastrous for the PWA in the local body elections as voters will now see it as a future ally of the DMK. People will no more believe in the alternate politics slogan of the PWA and a rout in the civic body elections will certainly hit its bargaining capacity in Parliament elections.
