Misinformation campaign on against AFR: BJP
CHENNAI: The opposition parties are carrying out a misinformation campaign on the construction of Away From Reactor (AFR) Spent Fuel Storage facility within the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tirunelveli, saying it is totally unsafe and against the rules, the BJP has said.
Pointing out that it is not a healthy trend to launch a protest for each and everything, BJP state president Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan said mere opposition to projects does not augur well for the development of the State. “Wrong information is being spread by a section of people against the AFR. This is not true,” Dr. Tamilisai said referring to the growing opposition by activists to using the nuclear plant’s premises for storing the spent nuclear material.
The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) has recently said that the scheme for the storage of spent fuel in a nuclear power plant was two-fold - one facility is located within the reactor building/service building, generally known as the spent fuel storage pool / bay, and the other is located away from the reactor, called the Away From Reactor (AFR) Spent Fuel Storage Facility, but within the plant’s premises.
